Thigh Bone Travels within Iceland

The Icelanders are a closely bound community, but even in Iceland communication can be a problem. At a séance held in Reykjavik in 1937, a drop-in communicator, when asked his name, replied, “What the hell does it matter to you what my name is?” One of the sitters asked the drop-in what he wanted. He was told, “I am looking for my leg. I want my leg.” So began some years of tiresome labor.

Though appearing frequently to the group, the drop-in still refused to give his name. Only when another medium, Ludvik, joined the group in 1939 did things begin to move. The drop-in said that his leg had been built into the wall of Ludvik’s house many years ago. Rude and difficult, the mystery man demanded coffee, alcohol, and snuff. Finally, Ludvik and another medium, Neils, issued an ultimatum. They would not talk to him until he gave his name. The man stopped coming, then finally brought news. His name was in the book in the church at Utskalar. At last, they had it.

Runolfur Runolfsson, nickname Runki. He died at age fifty-two, in October 1879, after getting drunk with friends and walking home along the beach alone. It was a windy night. Runki sat on a boulder and drank some more. He fell asleep; the rough sea took him. It was January when his body was washed ashore. Dogs and ravens had their fill. The remnants of the body were buried in Utskalar graveyard. Later a thigh bone was recovered from the beach and built into the wall of the house where Ludvik came to live.

In 1939 they opened Ludvik’s wall and found the bone. Was it Runki’s? The bone was long and Runki was six feet tall. His grave marking was lost, so they buried it in an unmarked plot in Utskalar graveyard. The village celebrated the bone’s return. At a later séance Runki thanked them for the help and said he liked the party. He would be their spirit guide at later séances.
